Boating with Kids: Tricks of the Trade

As all parents know, family adventures can be either magical or disastrous, and trips to sea are no different! As a used boat brokerage in San Diego, we understand that one of the most important things for heading out on the water is to plan well. Not sure where to start? Check out the following tips that will help keep a family boating trip safe, fun, and engaging for parents and kids alike.

Make a Plan Together

Whether your child is five or fifteen, including them in planning your trip is a great way to keep them engaged. Younger kids can help choose locations, and you can learn together about the route and the wildlife to watch for on the way. Older kids can be tasked with setting up an on-board menu or meal, or even choosing a more adventurous activity to add to the trip such as where to use kayaks or bikes at your destination.

Plan for the Worst

Think about what you would need if the weather makes an unpleasant change or if you are out for an extra day. For instance, a first-aid kit, non-perishable food, and weather-resistant clothing are all good to have in case of an emergency. You should also have enough US Coast Guard approved life jackets and safety gear for everyone aboard. And of course, always check the functionality of your engine before leaving. Don’t be Afraid to Deviate

If you think back to your own childhood, many of the most pivotal moments were spontaneous, and not scripted. Be ready for this on your trip, and don’t miss an opportunity to spend the afternoon among a pod of unexpected gray whales just to make it to your reserved slip before two p.m. Your kids will remember these found moments for life, but no one will care that you were late to the destination when you return home with stories.

Model Attitude

Not every trip will be magical, unfortunately. One of the best lessons for kids is how to smile during a gray, rainy, disappointing journey. They will learn this from you. Consider this before voicing your own complaints, and be genuine in your appreciation of family time together.
