In 2005, Congress passed legislation that required oil refiners to blend ethanol into gasoline, which has been a huge benefit to Iowa corn farmers in terms of significantly raising their economy and businesses. So, not surprisingly ethanol undoubtedly remained a hot topic in the February 1st, Iowa caucus.
Senator Ted Cruz, one of the Republican front-runner candidates, has included a call to end all subsidies for all forms of energy, including a phase-out of the previously created Renewable Fuel Mandate that created the ethanol economy in Iowa. This would directly affect Iowa and the economy surrounding corn production. However, studies have shown that ethanol is actually harmful to engines, including marine transportation, and proves a less efficient form of fuel.
