Top California Boating Destinations for Summer 2014

California has a multitude of great boating destinations for individuals with a desire to explore the coastline. However, with so many different spots to visit and see, knowing where to start can be a little difficult. So if you’re bored with the San Diego waters and are looking to chart your summer adventure, here are a few suggestions for fun and fabulous boating destinations.

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is a boater’s paradise, offering plenty of fishing, whale watching and water sports and activities. There are numerous pay-by-night slips in the area that allow boaters to easily guide their boat to safety so they hop off and enjoy the area. Once on shore, you can take advantage of beautiful beaches and a wide range of accommodations from comfortable inns and B&Bs to luxury resorts like the Ritz Carlton. If you love nature, you’re also a short distance from the Purisima Creek Redwood Preserve, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve or the Crystal Springs Reservoir, all great for a day of outdoor fun.

Morro Bay

Located just outside of San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay is a quaint area that isn’t overrun with tourists. Although a relatively quiet area, there are more than 50 city slips and 125 moorings within the harbor to dock your boat. While you may be familiar with San Diego’s marinas and boat slips, it’s important to do a bit of research about the area so you can comply by their county codes. Once settled, enjoy the views from Morro Bay and the numerous activities from the one-of-a-kind skateboard museum to an aquarium and family fun zone, great for those with little ones in tow. And with summer weather consistently in the 70s, you can be sure to enjoy a great day, whether on the water or exploring the town.

Santa Monica Bay

If you’ve recently purchased a new or used boat in San Diego and are looking for a trip not too far from home, head to Santa Monica Bay, home to the famous Santa Monica Pier and Marina Del Rey, a coastal town known for its luxury resorts. There are multiple spots to dock in Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey, though you’ll pay a premium for overnight storage. Once in town you have easy access to everything Santa Monica has to offer and you’ll be just a few miles away from Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Which destination sounds best? Pick one or try to hit them all this summer and enjoy the wonderful weather of California.
